I would suggest that you stay with LaTeX. However which system you implement or learn will depend on your own requitement. I list out some major reasons for staying with LaTeX
1. If you are going to be writing academic articles, mathematical stuff, books or reports etc i would suggest that stick with LaTeX. The reason being that LaTeX is the accepted submission format for various journals across the globe.
2. Also LaTeX provides various Style Files (Extension .sty) which can be used to generate documents in various formats. For example you can use the resume.sty to format a resume etc.
3. LaTeX documents are quickly and easily convertible into RTF, HTML and XML files using various converters available free on the net. Of course DVI, PS and PDF can always be compiled. Thus convertibility would not be a problem
4. LaTeX can easily implement bibliograpy and indexing which makes it a popular choice in the research world.
Admitted LaTeX is harder to learn that some others. Other good document formatting system are of course, troff and groff, Lout and Docbook. I suggest that you have a look of each of them and then decide which is more suitable for your needs.
