Well, no. Linux is a little different from an AIX or a Solaris and is
not a single vendor product. RedHat is a linux distro and has its own
versions the latest release being 8.0. Mandrake on the other hand
releases a relatively similar version of the kernel with its distro and
the latest version of the Mandrake distro is 9.0. You have other distros
like Slackware and Suse which have their own version numbers. 
When you talk about RedHat 8, u speak of the RedHat distro, and when u
say Linux x.x.x ur talking of the Linux kernel which is the central part
of the distro. 
BTW I do think there is quite some time for Linux 8.0 . The current
version is 2.4.20, I guess and it has taken more than a decade to reach
that version.
