Hi,
If you use startx command then it is actually a nice
front end script to the xinit command. This in turn
looks for the following files for the start up
configuration in which of course you can include the
window manager of your choice.

$(HOME)/.xinitrc
$(HOME)/.xserverrc
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (In absence of the first one)
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc (Of course in absence of you
can guess it).

And do a man xinit and man startx for more info.

Now if you are using debian there is a nice command
line tool which allow you change your WM.

Run this(command line): update-alternative --config
x-window-manager

Of course do a man update-alternative for more.

bye
siddhartha
