1. Potential speakers have something to orient themselves around

2. Attendees know what is coming, so people who are interested in the 
   theme attend in greater numbers.

3. Greater focus and prepared questions, giving greater inter-activity.

If you set a theme, someone can giv an introductory talk on the subject, 
and others can give more indepth talks. That way everyone gets to learn 
something. Otherwise talks tend to be too shallow, without depth.

Ummm, now *that* is a question we have *never* asked (doing so makes 
younger and older people conscious of their ages, and usually stops them 
from attending at all, forget about giving talks).
