I used to do something similar on RHAT installs... of course I needed to know
the /root partition from beforehand ;-)

[1] Boot from CDROM using the RHAT CD #1

[2] at the "boot:" prompt, used to type "vmlinuz  root=/dev/hd<xn> where xn was
my root mount point/partition

That wud boot the system and mount under the given root mount point

after that it was a simple case of re-installing LILO and configuring it to my
requirements :-)
