(I am in This is really a good topic, and since I am unable to attend your meets from Hyderabad :-( , I would like to present my experience (remotely) : I find the Slackware8.1 CD to be very handy in such cases (though I use Debian). Slack allows me to boot directly off the CD and look at my partitions through 'cfdisk /dev/hdx' (x is hda or hdb or hdc etc.)and locate my root directory, say, hdxn. Now,it is a simple matter of mounting the root partition by 'mount /dev/hdxn /mnt' and assuming the root status through 'chroot /mnt'. Once this is through, rewrite mbr with '/etc/lilo -v'. Now, remove the Slack CD from the drive, 'reboot' your m/c and......... enjoy. With Debian, I must know the root partition beforehand to enter rescue mode. This causes problems on m/cs where the partitions are not known beforehand, or there is some problem with the partitions. regards, K.Ghosh -- To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the body "unsubscribe ilug-cal" and an empty subject line.
