The answer depends upon why do you want to know. What
difference will that make? Also, what do you mean when
you say "popular"? Does it indicate What most people
prefer? or does it indicate what most people actually
do? Is popularity based on absolute or relative
numbers of people who are using? Depends a lot on how
you operationalize the concept of popularity.

Even now, I am given to believe new users of Linux are
somewhat innovators or early adopters. I do not know
if it has reached that critical mass of user base to
call them early majority, if we apply the diffusion of
innovation (see for example,
http://www.ciadvertising.org/studies/student/98_fall/theory/hornor/paper1.html)
in the context of operating system usage. I suspect
not. Once you have at least early adopters or laggards
joining in, a better picture may emerge. Typically, if
you are dealing with innovators or early adopters, you
may expect most people favor command lines as opposed
to GUIs, perhaps it gives them better controls?
Something like asking whether most people prefer using
stick shift gears or automatic transmissions for their
cars. But that does not tell us anything about the
computer interaction behavior of people at large. What
do you think accounts for the popularity of Windows,
or for that matter, popularity of KDE, Gnome, or
ICEWM?
