Of the choices, I used SUSE, MEPIS, and Knoppix, with
a view of loading them to my hard drive (this was for
a laptop with AMDK6-Duron Processor, with 128 MB RAM,
and on a free partition with dual booting (my other OS
is Win XP professional).
I liked all three, and for demo, each one worked well.
Eventually, I found SimplyMepis (flavor of MepisLinux,
based on Debian) easiest to install on the hard drive
from the live CD. The good thing is, considering this
is based on Debian, the install is simple and hassle
free. It still lets you make choices - downside being
it has KDC as default, does not have Gnome, but
hopefully you can download and change that once you
set up your system. However, the latest version of
MepisLinux come with both Gnome and KDE as desktop
managers, so that issue is taken care of now. I found
Mepis Linux is also easy to use following
installation. In my opinion, Mepis Linux could be a
good choice for a new user who's moving from Windows
to Linux through the dual booting track.
