most likely this is a case of ip spoofing.

the interesting point is example.com is a reserved domain. so you getting an
email from that is itself a spoof.
the 10.* ip address is a reserved ip range like 172.16.* & 192.168.*
some one most probably is using a mail server which has been written by him
to spoof the origin of the email. as he claims in the mail also. and he is
using gmail as it has a large storage space. so sending 1000 mails will not
cause a problem.

I doubt if the person can be traced unless you can give more information
doubt if sify or webel can do anything
