later we could fire up yahoo on sdg's pc under linux and sankarshan
participated thru yahoo chat .. zero cost (take a lead guys .. you can
participate too .. if you are not able to come over)

Tathagat's links with institutes was also discussed. We also discussed the
option of contacting other lug members to use their contacts to get in touch
with the so many technical colleges that have come up.

(hey .. we missed the manas-da link with the IIT's)

At this point it was suggested that if Prof.Thakur could become agreeable or
IT Dept of Shibpur or some other high profile persona could become
agreeable, then they could jointly request compass for a stall where they
would jointly display the various InfoTech courses under them. The first
batch of IT students will be hitting the market soon. They are in their
final year and will soon be a big resource for the exploding IT demand from
new setups flocking into w.bengal

A letter from that group of 'institutes' may work well. Ilug-cal has to be
in their stall too ! For co-ordinating 'things' ;-)

Possibility of 'other' corporates taking stalls and co-ordinating with lug
was also touched upon. It would be nice if the stalls were side by side. For
life members of compass, a 40% discount applies. If a compass member takes
stall(s) then we could co-ordinate with them.

To rope in other lugs, a co-ordinated effort to get RMS visit at a central
place was also talked about. If there is enough interest, maybe a loooong
q&a session in science city auditorium would be a possibility. RMS will
co-operate
with all such lugs which have GNU embedded in their name.

Before/After this the possibility of calling in super level guests from
europe was discussed again. The author of Samba, or others and even Linus
Torvals could be called over. The air fare from london is crashing. Other
lugs could be contacted for taking these esteemed guests to their cities.
They would have to send the air tkt to their city. Calcutta to Bhubneshwar
to Vizag to Hyderabad to Chennai to Bangalore to Kerala(holiday) to Goa to
Pune to Mumbai would be easily possible. Each lug would pay for bringing him
into their city. It will be a short hop. So it will be cheap too.

THEN the cost of the london air tkt would be shared among the participating
lugs .. q.e.d. quite easily done !

With so many sellers of laptops around now, and with the cost of laptops
plumetting, it could be easy to get a sponsor for giving the entire set of
laptops. It should be possible to get reliance telephones with free
connectivity also. Reliance needs to be requested for this. Probably will
happen. USB cords would be easy to get too.

The possibility of webcams with all the laptops was discussed too. Inter
alia the latest sony cams having good compatibility with linux was a good
point brought up by indra. (o.o.m. comment ..Now we need sony to sponsor
them.)(o.o.m.=out of meeting)

(test speeds during our meetings showed 115kpbs)

this stands till the other venue(s) stabilise. compass office at the
crossing of theatre road and rawdon street (near cookie jar, above old raj
hotel) could be used too. They have a meeting room on the meznine. Its near
the exhibition site and centrally located too.

The alipore venue suggested by jpm was also considered. Connection to that
place may pose a glitch.

Virtual meetings over internet would enable others to 'join' in without much
trouble.

i think this WAS discussed. The 'forms' idea is good. Saugata is the contact
!

indra had a good suggestion. To make people become active, a narrower
focussed approach will be required. If people FEEL that they will get lots
of benefits by joining ilug-cal or coming to the stalls, it will get more
people involved.

for info of all .. there IS a yahoo id created for yahoo chat based
interactive meetings. It is ilugContact .. add that to your list .. and be
there .. at the meetings

thank you for patient reading .. suggestions, volunteers, improvements
welcome
