Folks,

I run "ancient" Linux distributions -- RH7.3 and RH 8.0 -- on the two PCs that I use regularly. I am thinking of upgrading to a more recent distribution now. I seek advice/suggestions from you all about what distribution to upgrade to. We all have our favourite distributions, so I shall be glad if you can tell me what the strong points of your favourite are.

Presently I have with me the install CDs of FC3 and Slackware 10.1. >From recent posts on the list I have been getting the feeling that people are not too happy with FC3. Why is that? What is the experience with Slackware 10.1? Sumeet Moghe, what say you?

I'm willing to consider distributions other than these two, if they seem to have significant plus points.

Thanks,

I think you will prefer FC3 over Slackware because of your distro background. There are some differences in configuring the latter.
The choice depends on your software preferences too.
I have FC3 , Mdk-10.1, Slackware-10, Debian-Sarge, ...and more installed. mdk-10.1 has too much of gui configuration tools. Fc3 requires at least 192Mb of RAM . Apparently their modified agp card drivers for i8xx in particular gives the Slackware flavour.

Thanks, for the feedback. I am not new to Slackware, in fact I love it. Its just that for some time I had stopped using it. What is your expreience with Slackware 10? What kind of machine do you use it on? For what sort of tasks?

Will be grateful for a reply.

KDE-3.2 on Slackware-10 is quite fast. I use it on a 2.0Ghz i86 with plenty of RAM. I use it for LaTeX, maxima, Isabel, HOL, some compiling and music mainly. But I prefer FC3.
