OK, I found what the problem was! I could not ping my Windows XP
machine because of the Cisco VPN Client. It has an option called
"Stateful Firewall (Always on)". Note that this is in effect even
while the Cisco client is not running. I turned off the option and
ping worked!

Now on to learning about NAT etc. so that my Windows machine can
connect to the internet.
