Dear Harish,

The following are the detailed results I encounter with
my laptop.

Can you suggest a viable solution? I hope you can guide me in knowing much
about the operation of linux

I noted down the Grub bootloader's series of commands when my laptop is
functioning well.

They are as follows.

Before booting my laptop shows the following four options menu in text mode
interface.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10-2.6.16.54-0.2.8

Failsafe—SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10-2.6.16.54-0.2.8

Ubuntu 8.04 kernel 2.6.24-16-generic

Ubuntu 8.04 kernel 2.6.24-16-generic(recovery mode)

The first one is highlighted. This OS will load as default one.

Using arrow keys, other options can also be chosen and they can also be
loaded.

When any of the four options is highlighted, pressing key e leads to series
of commands as follows

For the first one, pressing e gives

            root (hd0,2)

            kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.16.54-0.2.8-smp root=/dev/sda1 vga=0x314
resume=/->

            initrd /intrd-2.6.16.54-0.2.8-smp

For the second one, pressing e gives

root (hd0,2)

            kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.16.54-0.2.8-smp root=/dev/sda1 vga=normal
showopt->

            initrd /intrd-2.6.16.54-0.2.8-smp

For the third one, pressing e gives

           root(hd0,6)

           kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root =
UUID=232d9e4c-4f8-474d->

           initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic

           quiet

For the fourth one pressing e gives

           root(hd0,6)

           kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root =
UUID=232d9e4c-4f8-474d->

           initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic

In the above original condition, both Suse and ubuntu can be loaded
successfully.

It so happened that Suse got corrupted and ubuntu can alone be loaded.

Suse is installed again. Now before operation of Grub boot loader.the Suse OS
is loaded.

I cannot load Ubuntu.

Now the condition is as follows. At the prompt of grub

1.find /boot/grub/stage1 gives the following message

  (hd0,0)

  (hd0,6)

2. root (hd0,0) gives the following one

File system type is reiserfs, partition type 0x83

3.root (hd0,6) gives the following message

Filesystem type is ext2fs,partition type 0x83

4.setup (hd0,6) gives

Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists ….yes

Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists ….yes

Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1.5" exists ….yes

Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0,6)"…failed(this is not fatal)

Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0,6)"…failed(this is not fatal)

Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,6) /boot/grub/stage2 p
/boot/grub/nemu.lst " ….succeeded

Done.

5.When typed root (hd0,6) and enter

Filesystem type is ext2fs,partition type 0x83

6.Entering boot

Error 8 : Kernel must be loaded before booting

7.Entering kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24.-16-generic root gives

[Linux-bzImage,setup=0x2a00,size=0x1ce278]

9. Entering boot gives series of messages with the last message

[1405.801849]kernel panic-not syncing:VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(104,1)

10. Setup (hd0,0) gives

Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists ….yes

Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists ….yes

Checking if "/boot/grub/reiserfs_stage1.5" exists ….yes

Running "embed /boot/grub/reiserfs_stage1_5(hd0,0)"…18 sectors are embed

ed.

succeeded.

  Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,0) (hd0,0)1+18 p
(hd0,0)/boot/grub/sta

ge2 /boot/grub/nemu.lst " ….succeeded

Done.

11.entering boot

Error 8 : kernel must be loaded before booting

12.Entering kernel /vmlinuz

[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1e00,size=0x150aef]

13. Entering boot

kernel panic-not syncing:VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,9)

The above are the responses for the various commands.
Can anyone suggest a solution for this condition

Thanks in advance
