Sorry I was not in town the whole day yesterday, hence the delay. me hurt? no not at all; yeah I did think you were from trivandum; so I thought being a Physics man - you can very well be on your own with some direct help from me.
>From the fdisk list I find that you have 4 linux partitions 2 swap partitions and a fat32 partition. would like to what all is in each partition! Of course I know from the earlier grub report that you do have 2 bootable linuxes one in partion 1 and the other if I remember right in partition 7. what is there i the rest of the partitions. Please back up any precious data of yours on the laptop. why do you have 2 linux swaps? for example the following is the fdisk -l output of my laptop: /dev/sda1 * 1 3293 26449858+ 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda2 3293 3424 1048576 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda3 3424 5336 15362644+ a5 FreeBSD /dev/sda4 5337 19457 113426932+ 5 Extended /dev/sda5 5337 16220 87425698+ 83 Linux /dev/sda6 16221 17904 13526698+ 83 Linux /dev/sda7 * 17905 19457 12474441 83 Linux My laptop originally came with 1 single partion with preloaded vista. i do not use vista, so I shrunk the vista patition to the best I can to about 26 GB. the free space was then partitioned to 1 linux swap, 1 freeBSD root. all the 3 above are primary partitions. partition 4 is an extended envelope to hold logical partitions 5, 6 and 7. partition 5 is the largest and is my common home partition for both the linuxes I have right now. Partition 6 contain a debian/ubuntu hibrid called Poseidon which I generally use for my day to day use. on 7 I have another linux which I change as and when a new distro is released, a sort of experimental workbench you can see I have only one swap and home which i use commonly for both the linuxes. I use the grub installed in the more permanent linux (Poseidon) to which I add the booting info of all other bootable operating systems on my machine. About yours: It is all but muddled up and all problems seem to be because of this muddle you have created. best/harish 2008/12/20 sankar pillai <[email protected]> > Dear Sir, > I got the following output for the command you sugessted me. > > > Disk /dev/sda:320.0 GB, 32007293233376 bytes > > 255 heads ,63 sectors/track,38913 cylinders > > Units =Cylinders of 16065*512 =8225280 bytes > > > > Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System > > /dev/sda1 1 13 104391 83 > Linux > > /dev/sda2 4 275 2104515 82 Linux swap / > Solaris > > /dev/sda3 276 13406 105474757+ 83 Linux > > /dev/sda4 26242 38913 101787840 f w95 Ext'd(LBA) > > /dev/sda5 26242 26764 4200966 82 Linux swap / > Solaris > > /dev/sda6 26765 31985 41937651 c W95 FAT32(LBA) > > /dev/sda7 31986 35632 29294496 83 Linux > > /dev/sda8 35633 38913 26354601 83 Linux > > > > With kind regards, > > U.Sankar > > > > > > > On 12/19/08, sankar pillai <[email protected]> wrote: >> >> Dear Sir, >> Please forgive me if my previous mail has hurt you.I am now on >> paper valuation work of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University,Tirunelveli.I >> cannot come to see at once.Probably you might thougt that I may based in >> Trivandrum itself.
