I was wondering why you were not prepared to come to me though I am prepared to help. I think a 1/2 day sitting can really help you to take off. I am no big expert, but a scientist and of course a linux enthusiast. Actually for a technology oriented person like you I can help you with lots of suggestions and software which you could use for personal as well as academic purposes.
I am in a quandary that my instructions may or may not be sufficient to safely help you out. I think both the linuxes you have installed may be intact, but the grub in the mbr may need some editing to make both linuxes to properly boot.
