Hi,
The proxy sever settings for Ubuntu Gnome can be done at
[System>Preferences>Network Proxy]. In that application, you will find
a [proxy configuration] tab- which will give you 3 options. If you
know the proxy settings, you can set it using manual settings option,
or autoconfiguration (needs autoconf url). Also note that many
applications like Firefox have their own proxy settings - which must
be set to follow system settings, so that you don't need to configure
each app separately. There is one drawback, that you will have to
change your proxy settings each time you switch between networks (eg:
college & home), or your internet may not work for apparently
mysterious reasons. Its hard to track down proxy problems, unless you
know forehand that it is the wrong setting.

There is one another issue that may depend on the network you are
connected to. Many of them provide only HTTP proxy (usually Squid) and
so, only web browsing may work. IMs and downloads may not work. If you
don't know of separate proxies for different services, the best option
available is to check the 'Use the same proxy for all proxy for all
protocols' options- and pray that all web services work.

Gokul Das
