Linux preferred over windows because of
Stability .. System is more stable less blue screens in simple
terms
Security ... Linux architecture makes it harder for viruses to
penetrate through
Adapt .... You can adapt and improve upon version of Linux to suit
your need which is hard on a windows machine .
Instead of just using an operating system Linux helps
you to learn how an operating system works which will help students in
the longer run even programming on a windows OS.
Cost ... less cost compared to costly windows licences.
Bugs are fixed faster due to community involvement and more support
( forums etc)
I believe your college runs using Govt funds and it is Govt official
policy to use FOSS.
