It would be good to call the system GNU/Linux, just to give credit to
the GNU project that started it all.

1. Because of its freedom
2. Because it reduces cost to null
3. Because you get the latest technology
4. Because it allows you to go deep into the system and even study and
modify the source code
5. Because you get to see code written by some master programmers
(students of literature are taught works by great writers; students of
cinema are taught creations by masters like Sergei Eisenstein; why
students of software are not shown code written by master coders?)
6. Because you can legally use at home the same software used in your
college without having to either do something illegal or spending a lot
of money
7. Because of its security and stability
8. Because students can really contribute to building the software they
use (I am sure this will be exciting)
9. Because you have a number of options for the software you need
10. Because you can easily build a parallel processing super computer in
your college!
11. Because GNU/Linux now supports our languages
12. Because the world is moving to FOSS!

> "Why to shift from windows to Linux?"

1. Because M$ Windows is like a black box (you don't get to see how it
works)
2. Because M$ Windows does not allow you to modify its code
3. Because (any way) its code sucks - it is unstable and insecure
4. Because in M$ Windows you get to use ancient technology like Turbo C
or Visual Basic (ugh!)
5. Because M$ technology is not used for real high tech jobs (Google
uses GNU/Linux and Yahoo! uses Free BSD. So many other examples)
6. Because most supercomputers use Unix-like operating systems including
GNU/Linux

I guess that is a fair set of reasons. Just ask if you need more :-)
