An update: System setup: D945GCLF mobo, 2GB RAM, 80GB Seagate Barracuda SATA I hdd, onboard graphics, NIC, and audio. 0. Don't bother buying external case for CD/DVD drives. Could not get to boot any LiveCD distro. At first I thought the DVDROM was defective. Got rid of the external case, connected the CD/DVD to directly to the PATA port - install CDs/DVDs booted. 1. I was able to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 and openSUSE 11.0. All devices (NIC, Sound, SATA, PATA) work for above distros. The atom 230 CPU is dual core @ 1.6GHZ with 512K L2 cache for each core. 2. The system boots in about 60 secs from power up to GDM login screen. 3. Using Gnome/Compiz desktop the performance is acceptable. OO writer loads up in < 10 secs the first time it is invoked. Quirks: 1. CentOS 5.2 LiveCD - did not boot. I get a kernel panic. Will report to the CentOS team. 2. Embedded NIC RTL8169 shows a huge number of dropped packets (in Ubuntu and openSUSE). Not sure what the problem is. I have reported it to Intel tech support. Overall, performance is acceptable for an average desktop usage - OO, FF, email etc. -- Arun Khan _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe <password> <address>" in the subject or body of the message. http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
