To everyone else who might later want to do the same, a Linksys WMP54G works just fine. I'm told that the versions (4.1 and above) with the newer chipset won't work out of the box, but the model I bought was manufactured in March 2008 and it works superbly on Ubuntu 8.10. Be aware that drivers for this particular card (which uses the Ralink RT2561 / RT61 chipset) will have to be compiled if you're using Debian 4.0 (Etch) or older. I have also found that this particular card works much better than the Netgear WG311 that is the other popular card available in Madras, both in performance and ease of installation. In case you can't find a store anywhere else, Mercy Electronics on Lattice Bridge Road (L.B. Road), Adyar has quite a few of these in stock.
