Hmm, you're right, there are some files under
the /lib/firmware/(kernel-name) subdirectory. But I'm not too sure what
to do with that. I think I'll just settle for installing an older
(version 8.04) Ubuntu for now, because everything seems to be working on
it.

Ah, but there lies the problem. This desktop is an old one without
integrated ethernet. I'd bought a PCI ethernet card a long while ago,
but it was one of those fakes masquerading as a RealTek RTL8139D.
