It is quite disheartening when people compare closed source
proprietary products with Free/Open Source Software products, where
the fundamental principle or ideology that we believe in sharing of
source code, and knowledge doesn't exist in the former, and there is
_no_ room for comparison at all!
+1 * 1024 !
It always surprises me when F/OSS aware people start comparing proprietary
alternatives to F/OSS software. Here I am not even going with what Shakthi said
about the 'ideology' -- Open source even purely as a development model just
makes sound sense !
As a small/medium sized business it just becomes more easier to
own/control/customize an Open Source product than bother with having to convince
behemoths like Oracle to include the feature/bug fix/customization you require !
If you have doubts, ask Red Hat(*) !
All that said, I don't feel overly concerned about the Oracle acquisition. The
nature of the open source software development model is the built-in fault
tolerance. Good FOSS survives acquisition (eg: Netscape), missing maintainers
(too many to list -- but just as a thought experiment, do you really think linux
will die with Linus's death ?), veiled attacks (eg: SCO's attack) and any other
faults !
Once free, you can bet that software will survive if it is any good.
cheers,
