Though that might be true, salaries for better or worse, are decided by 
market/macro-economic conditions more than anything else. I don't think 
salary needs to be the motivational factor for any career - the choice 
is simple (though quite hard) - if money is the motivation, it is 
unlikely a person will be happy no matter which career he/she chooses - 
I'll hazard to say even if they do "succeed" in it.

So I think it's more of a personal/character decision than anything 
else. I've read a rather neat quote I liked recently - it goes something 
like - "don't try to be a success, strive to be of value". I have to 
agree with that. If you can provide genuine value to your 
employer/customer/client, I think most of the money/success issues will 
take care of themselves eventually. And I don't think "genuine value" 
happens  unless you also happen to like the job :)
