I have not tried it yet with the newer ones.

Did not have much luck with my decade old HP 5MP either (about 4 years
back).  In retrospect, I think it was mostly due to the operator
(worked out of his home) who refilled it.

The cartridges for the newer models have embedded chips.   There are a
couple of franchises (Cartridge World to name one) in Mumbai that
claim compatibility even for the newer cartridges or money back.  This
is for b/w though.  For my printer cartridges, the cost differential
is about Rs. 400 between refilled and original, so I am guessing they
probably have some OEM alliance with the manufacturers.
