I don't understand what you are stuck with here. You might want to upgrade to Thunderbird 9.0 ( if you think there is something wrong with version 7.0) . If you are looking for alternatives, one mail client that you should really try is claws mail. It's in the repos. You can try this: Edit -> Folder Properties -> click on the 'repair folder' button.
