Indic fonts are very difficult to create. I have worked with Mr.Murali
Krishna, an expert font developer. I used to write dongle protected
keyboard drivers for his commercial fonts. Please ask the student to get in
touch with me off-list. I can introduce them to him. He is THE authority
for pro grade south Indian fonts.

Creating Indic fonts are a mix of Artistry, Carpentry (in the sense of
joins) and Technology. Tamil is relatively easy. Other south Indian fonts
require incredible number of joins to realise the entire character set.
Then comes the concept of `kerning` which requires language skills too.

On an [OT] note, it's incredible that he was honored with doctorate in
Singapore and Sri Lanka for his contribution to tamil computing. Wonderful,
he was not even invited to our great world Tamil conference :)

Regards,
Arun
