I am using wvdial. I faced the same issue. To keep the connection persistent, just keep pinging some url. This might be silly idea. But it works for me. It is getting disconnected because your device is losing connection to their tower/server if it is idle for around 5 minutes. Try changing your DNS entry as 8.8.8.8 but I have not tried this.
