First off! learn how to quote.

What is it that you want to do? IMHO, there is a very big difference
between Debian and Ubuntu and at the same time None at all. it depends
on how you look at it.

Usability wise ubuntu is a thousand miles ahead of debian. Ubuntu is
more usable on the desktop. similarly, I wont be caught dead with a
ubuntu install on one of my webservers.

On the Desktop:

If you know whats going-on or if you dont care, e.g If you know how does
that pretty icon automatically comes on the desktop when you attach the
Digital Camera, or if you dont care, then it makes sense to use ubuntu.

If you wish to know what all you need to do in-order to get a particular
version of the camera working, and are inclined to do it every single
time you need to use the camera, then I guess debian is for you.

On the server:

I have never used ubuntu on a server so I wont comment about that. But,
I have used debian on various kind of server settings, mail, web,
gateway. It rocks ... the ease of doing stuff and the quality of the
packages and package management system all shines.

Coming to your orignal question, what debian to use? Like many other
questions this one also has one answer. It depends.

It depends on various things, it depends on your hardware, it depends on
what exactly are you trying to do/run. If you just want to run a desktop
then sid (unstable) is the way to go.
