From your description, it sounded like OpenOffice is picking up some unsuitable font for Hindi (with Unicode, it can automatically select a font without the need for you to specify it), but then the problems should have gone away once you switched specifically to Lohit Hindi, which is quite an adequate font. Can you show us the results of typing fc-list :lang=hi in a terminal?
