I would first try the following things:
1. Open the preferences file in your system folder and drag the finder
preferences to the trash. Restart and a new, improved finder preference
file will be generated.
2. Look at your memory control panel and see to it that virtual memory is
set to no more than twice the amount of built in memory. 150% would be
better. Ideally I would shut it off, but don't shut it off if you're
running 8.6 with only the original 32MB RAM. If so then you should upgrade
the RAM.
3. Download "finder fixer" from a download site and double or triple the
amount of memory allocated to the finder. A google.com search should turn
it up.
4. Get rid of any desktop pictures you may have, unless you have a lot RAM
and extra memory allocated to the Appearance control panel.
5. Avoid opening too many applications at one time.
6. If you have access to a utility like Norton or TechTool Pro, optimize
your Hard Drive.
