The only time I had to phone Apple for help was because of similar problem
to this, I had the flashing question mark and my iMac 400 wouldn't boot from
the disk. The advice they gave me was something that would _never_ have
occurred to me, to start with the extensions off (shift key) while booting
from the CD. This worked, and I was able to repair my system.
