I really dont think that firewire is necessary for the readers.  The USB 
is quite fast  and it is not like you are downloading a huge amount of 
data.  I have tried several different card readers none of which cost 
over $35 and now read all 5 types of media cards including the 
Microdrive.  I think the nicest for the money is the POI Travel Flash 
which includes a short fold up USB connection (which is nice with an 
ibook) and 16mb of built in memory and a separate USB extension cable.  
It is about the size of pack of cigarettes and quite light.  It connects 
fine with OS 9 or X  on my iMac and ibook. I paid $35 for it.
