Hi,

Not sure if this will answer all of your questions, but here are a few tips:

If the Apple - Option - Escape combo won't allow you to force quit or
relaunch the finder & it becomes necessary to do a hard reboot, hold the
power button down until the machine restarts. I believe this will be a safer
method than pulling the plug.

I have heard of others having problems using certain disk utilities on OSX
machines. I would suggest you try Disk Warrior, which is both effective &
safe. Speed Disk is also good for defragmentation. This is appearing to be
an issue on machines when they are sent out with the factory install of OSX
(see Macintouch). 

Not sure what else to suggest at this point, as I have had pretty good luck
with the same set up, after I ran DW & Speed Disk (my drive was heavily
fragmented too - BTW).
