the economics of the PC industry and the car industry differ greatly. a car made 20 years ago still functions perfectly well on todays streets and highways. a computer just 5 years old will have problem running much of todays software (and virtually all of todays games) without significant upgrades. Apple (and the other computer manufacturers) know that serious purchasers will be looking to buy a new computer in 3-5 years if not sooner. Other people buy a computer and forget about it (for a variety of reasons) in a year or so. There's a middle ground of people who are technically proficient enough to upgrade their existing equipment...... and these people aren't going to be repeat customers any time remotely soon anyway, and more or less "quality" isn't going to change that. personally? i wind up buying a new computer every 2-3 years even if my current model is working fine. why? if i want to stay competitive and keep my customers, i need cutting edge machines. if it takes me twice as long to do a Photoshop job as the next guy, I start losing money and fast. -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
