Sarah, I read some of the posts in response to your query, and I'm not sure you received an adequate response. The Tech Tools that comes with AppleCare is the "deluxe" version, not the "pro." And I suppose you could lump Micromat's Drive 10 program (which has not been as thorough as Tech Tools) into the "pro" category. So, being the "deluxe" level, it is at a cost point that allows it to make sense for Apple to bundle into the AppleCare package for basic troubleshooting. As far as booting into OS 9, here's what really important. In order for any disk/file utility to properly work and to repair a hard drive, specifically if it's your startup drive, you should NOT be running it from your startup disk. It is always advisable to actually boot your machine from the CD, and to run the utility from the CD. That being the case, it becomes somewhat irrelevant as to which OS is on the CD, because this has nothing to do with the OS you run your machine on. The bottom line is that Tech Tools will work on ANY HFS+ formatted hard drive, whether you are typically running OS 9 or OS X. Even if the Tech Tools CD had OS X on it as the system, you would still have to take the time to reboot.
