Thanks Obi-Wan & Steve for your thoughts. As it turns out, I failed to properly connect the four-pin connecters that supply power to the new firewire port. She went through the upgrade like a charm after that adjustment.
My new problem, though, is that the modem won't detect a dial tone from the phone line. The phone jack and cord aren't the culprits. The machine identifies and configures the original internal 56k modem successfully, but when I go to dial up, I get the message that the modem cannot detect a dial tone. I'm using aol (for which I have no excuse), if that helps. Also, OS 8.5 which will soon be updated to 8.6 if I can get online with the darn thing. Outside of this glitch the new card is doing quite well and the new ram has shown up in the finder. I'll certainly call Sonnet's tech support. Thanks again.
