If you find a software solution to this quest, you'll be able to retire 
from Boeing and live off the royalties of selling copies of this one. 
All the methods I know of require erasing the HD to partition it. Buy, 
borrow or beg a removable HD, USB or Firewire (you didn't say which iMac 
you have) download all your existing files, reformat and partition the 
HD, and reinstall.

Nothing wrong with beating dead horses, sometimes they wont get up and 
walk no mater how hard you beat them.
