No, and you wouldn't want to, since OS X's native way of identifying 
files is through the file extension, just like on a Windows machine.

At first, I was a little annoyed with this, too.  But after a while, I 
began to see the benefits.  Having the file type as a three letter 
extension gives you more flexibility in changing file types on stubborn 
files, since, if all else fails, you can just change the extension.  The 
old Macintosh way of identifying files without extensions may LOOK 
elegant, but it lacks flexibility.

Ergo the reason why I now have OS X show file extensions at all times 
now.  I had them hidden for the first few months of using it.  I find it 
more useful to have them out in the open.
