Has anyone ever found a way to un-preference this "feature"?
No, and you wouldn't want to, since OS X's native way of identifying files is through the file extension, just like on a Windows machine. At first, I was a little annoyed with this, too. But after a while, I began to see the benefits. Having the file type as a three letter extension gives you more flexibility in changing file types on stubborn files, since, if all else fails, you can just change the extension. The old Macintosh way of identifying files without extensions may LOOK elegant, but it lacks flexibility. Ergo the reason why I now have OS X show file extensions at all times now. I had them hidden for the first few months of using it. I find it more useful to have them out in the open. John A.
