read the Mac OS license again. Some software (notably QuarkXPress) 
includes a clause in the license that allows this. The MacOS license 
does not.

Yes, OS 9 will install on a 5400; but the OS 9 CD that comes with an 
iMac is not really an OS 9 installer ---- it ONLY INCLUDES the system 
components required to run on an iMac.

Mac OS 9 requires a file called the Mac OS ROM file. The Mac OS ROM 
file needed to run an iMac is very different from the ROM File needed 
to run on a 5400. The iMac Software Install CD only contains the Mac OS 
ROM file for the iMac.
