I'm an employee of Apple's marketing dept and no, it's not a Very Bad
Idea to ask. The OP clearly did not understand that he is not allowed
to do what he is doing, so some simple facts and education will set him
right. He's not out to rip anybody off. I'm glad I had the opportunity
to let him know the facts and set the record straight. Your post
reminded me that OS 9 can still be ordered directly from Apple (though
I believe that you now need to show proof that you already own OS X to
get the discounted price).

IOW, we've all learned something.

Now, if someone comes on here and asks how to pirate or offers to
pirate Apple (or other) software, then I'm under an ethical obligation
to take notice and possibly report it, as should everyone who cares
about keeping up the Mac community's OUTSTANDING reputation for low
incidences of piracy.

The Mac market is simply too small to brook much pirating, and it's one
of Apple's continuing struggles to persuade developers to write
software for a relatively small marketshare. Piracy only encourages
developers to leave the platform altogether, but I'm sure I don't have
to explain this to many of you on this list -- you're the savvy ones! :)

One should never be afraid to ASK if something you're about to do is
legally or ethically OK. Not everyone knows, that's why some of us are
here -- to help.
