For the most part, I agree with you, UNLESS you happen to be the lucky owner of a flat-panel iMac. I've done ALL my singing using the iMac's internal mic. I originally did the first recording that way as a lark to see how it would turn out. I was ASTONISHED at the quality of the flat panel iMac's built-in mic. The sound quality was all but indistinguishable from a good quality electret condenser mic! And the remarkable quiet of the new iMac itself also lent to the amazing quality of the recording as well. An external mic would still be more flexible and easier to work with, but from a quality standpoint, if you have a flat panel iMac, don't dismiss the built-in mic too quickly. It's much better than you might imagine (I suspect it's of such high quality to allow speech recognition to work more reliably... speech recognition never worked very well on the original iMacs which had mediocre quality built in mics at best).
