The following is not meant as a flame.

Are you NUTS?

The advantages of OS X over OS 9 are so legion it *pains* me to boot
back into OS 9. And as of 10.2 any speed advantage OS 9 enjoyed is gone.

But wait, you say, that's not the case on my machine, you say!

Well, I think I know the cause of the problem and the solution. In a
nutshell, you are still loading hordes of Mac OS 9 extensions in
Classic that you shouldn't be. They don't break Classic (they can, but
they generally don't), but they DO slow it down tremendously.

I wish I had the handy summary of extensions (including Apple
extensions) you can turn off in Classic. Here's the best one I could
find: http://www.lowendmac.com/practical/02/0507.html

There is actually a piece of shareware (can't recall the name, sorry)
that makes this easier. For $15, you can have a completely optimised
and LIGHTNING fast copy of Classic that activates ONLY when you boot
into Classic, not affecting your booting into OS 9. It turns off TONS
of extensions and DRAMATICALLY lowers Classic startup time as well as
performance. My Classic startup is down to just over 20 seconds, and
that's because I decided to add some extensions back in for specialised
purposes (mainly scanning).

I timed things with a stopwatch using the last remaining two apps I
*was* booting into OS 9 to use: Photoshop 4 (yes I have 7, but I'm more
efficient on 4 because it's my favourite), and Quark 5. After "tuning"
Classic, I find that both apps do in fact run considerably FASTER in
Classic than they do in OS 9. Amazing, but true.

Give it a try!
