From your description, I'd say very severe directory corruption. Here's what I'd do: 1. Reboot computer. 2. Hold down command and s. 3. This will give you a DOS-like screen of stuff. At the bottom will be instructions for running fsck. Follow them. 4. If the message you get back from fsck is that the file system was modified, run it again. Repeat until you get a message that the hard drive appears to be okay. 5. Exit per printed instructions (or just type "exit") and the machine will soon startup as normal. 6. Restart machine one more time. 7. Okay, now that we are there, and assuming you have a normal bootup and some semblance of speed back -- start backing up files IMMEDIATELY!! 8.
