there's a muuch easier way to do all this.

boot to the OS X Install CD - insert the CD, reboot, hold down 'c'

when it asks you what language to install, go to the 'Installer' menu 
at the top left. Choose 'Open Disk Utility'. Operate as Disk First Aid 
- select your hard drive, click the 'First Aid' tab, and hit 'repair'.

'fsck' doesn't resolve many HFS+ issues. Disk Utility repairs most.
