Hi Rich, nope, i couldn't change the settings even logged into my login, and in my Home. The privileges were all grayed out, so I couldn't modify anything. Going the root route was actually quite easy, though perhaps foolish!! If there are easier, safer ways that others know about that would have fixed the problem, I would like to know what they are (knowing allowed; guessing not allowed!!)
