There's nothing to do, really. I would recommend the upgrade, you will get a much more stable system as a result. It should simply be a matter of booting up from the 9.x CD, double-click the installer and follow the directions. Your files and programs will not be affected unless you deliberately choose to erase the hard drive first. You would probably want to do what's called a "clean install" -- that is the new system folder does not erase the old one -- and then move some of your fonts and preferences back into the new one from the old one.
