Hi Macers:

One of the negative points that's frequently brought up concerning
all-in-one computers like the iMac & eMac is the lack of
expandability. With the addition of USB and more recently FireWire to
Apple computers I don't think that this is really that big of an
issue. Yeah, I can hear all of you reminding me of the monitor and
graphics card not being upgradable, but for most users I don't think
that really matters, I know it hasn't for us.

However, the recent video problems (raster shift) occurring with the
eMac has got me to thinking whether or not I want to own an
all-in-one again. I realize that this problem is being repaired (new
power/analog/video assembly) under warranty at no cost to the owner.
But, there is still a considerable inconvenience involved, for some
owners being repaired as many as 3 times for the same problem. Also,
a few people have mentioned that this repair is somewhere in the
neighborhood of $400-$500. Ouch!

I guess what I'm thinking is, what if something like this occurs when
it's not under warranty? Do you spend the $400-500 to repair it. I
don't think so, as the cost of the repair more than likely would
exceed the value of many all-in-one Macs. I know I wouldn't pay for
it on my iMac. Comparatively, a Sony 17" flat CRT monitor, would only
cost about $250 (less for cheaper brands) to replace if you had a
separate monitor.

Currently the CD-ROM on my iMac is acting up (odd noise, failure to
read some CDs) and from what I've read on the Apple forums, it's the
beginning of it's end. Also, it looks like it will cost somewhere in
the neighborhood of $300 to replace. It's not going to happen.
However, a standard internal CD-ROM drive is relatively inexpensive,
less than $50, I believe, and is easily installed in most stand alone
CPUs.

My wife wanted to get me an eMac for Christmas but I just think it's
too risky to buy one right now, plus I think I need to convince
myself that an all-in-one is the right type of Mac to get.

What do you all think, does the all-in-one design outweigh the
possible repair/replacement consequences??

Allen
