My position on this is that this line is mostly rubbish. It's true that all-in-ones have less expandability than say towers, and there are rare situations where the AIO's offer some inconvenience (for example, replacing a hard drive in a tower is child's play compared to doing the same on an iMac). Consequently, handyman-type owners who are determined to make their machines last as long as possible should probably look at a tower over an iMac. For most typical Mac owners, however, it's a wash. The machine is probably going to be replaced with a newer one in three to five years anyway, and the USB/FW combo make expansion easy. > I guess what I'm thinking is, what if something like this occurs when > it's not under warranty? It doesn't if you're smart. If you're smart, you buy AppleCare and then replace the machine when or shortly after the extended warranty expires. > My wife wanted to get me an eMac for Christmas but I just think it's > too risky to buy one right now, plus I think I need to convince > myself that an all-in-one is the right type of Mac to get. > > What do you all think, does the all-in-one design outweigh the > possible repair/replacement consequences?? I wouldn't worry about it much. The odds of you getting the raster shift problem are very low -- particularly now that Apple has identified the problem as an expensive one (for them). You can be sure that when a problem like this crops up (a component flaw or a design flaw) they work quickly behind the scenes to correct the problem. For example, early iPods (some anyway) were prone to have their FW port come loose and stop functioning. At first Apple didn't realise they had a design issue, but investigations by iPod owners (I followed this story on xlr8yourmac.com) uncovered the true culprit -- a bad soldering job in a key spot. Once Apple had identified and verified the problem for themselves, changes were made to the manufacturing and QC process, and now you never hear about people with this problem anymore. I'm sure the same is happening/has already happened with the eMac. If you're nervous, spring for AppleCare. It's cheaper than a tower. Or get a tower if that's what you determine would make you happiest. _Chas_ Come to ... The CHASbah! http://thechasbah.blogspot.com **Go see BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE.
