I believe this post was sent to me directly. I will cc the list as I don't
have a solution for this person (or for myself).

I've found this firmware update catastrophe on the Internet in a few places
and there doesn't seem to be a solution -- other than a repair shop. I
suspect you need a new logic board.

In my situation:

rev b, plenty of RAM, Japanese system software... The OS 9 CD recommends
installing firmware (from the disc) before upgrading from 8.6. During
firmware upgrade I had the progress bar, but then a dead iMac with the
exception of an amber monitor light and a running fan (I think). No
keyboard command, paper clip or CD has any affect -- the screen is dark and
nothing functions. I even tried paper clipping the programmer's hole. Dead
as Elvis as D. Pogue would say.

I've opened up the machine and pressed the CUDA reset and replaced the
battery. This had no effect for me but I hope Adriian has better luck.

Then I went out and bought a used iMac. So, now my bondi blue sits there,
under the desk, collecting dust, giving me a reason to once again SWITCH.
