I think that you're confusing power and data here.  USB is capable of supplying
a small amount of electrical power to run devices from, in addition to carrying
the data from these devices back to the iMac (that's where the power to
run your mouse and keyboard come from).  Dennis has connected many peripherals
to his iMac and the data goes through his USB hub and then through his keyboard.
 He does not use the USB to power his peripherals however, that is provided
by the power supply for the USB hub, or by plugging the device into its
own, separate power supply.  In your case the problem was down to your superdisk
trying to take more electrical power from the USB cable than was available,
causing your iMac to hang.
